Deep Tissue Massage

A “Deep Tissue Massage” is a broad descriptor open to interpretation and re-branded under a myriad of trademarked labels.

At Deep Tissue NYC, we have not chosen not to create a clever, esoteric branding of movements which can not be trademarked.

What we call a “deep tissue massage” involves this process:

1. A conversation to clearly understand the context of your discomfort, goals, and touch preferences

2. A thorough warm up of the muscles using sustained compression and myofascial release

3. Close communication with the client

4. Deep myofascial release / structural integration, and Pin & stretch

Who this is for:

  • You are looking to improve your posture or address “knots”

Who this is NOT for:

  • You want gentle, gliding strokes (Swedish Massage)

Swedish Massage

Recommended for those who are looking for relaxation and are sensitive to deep pressure.

Why you might want this:

  • You prefer relaxation and long, gliding strokes
  • You prefer the use of massage oil

Who this is NOT for:

  • You prefer to remain clothed
  • You prefer targeted deep pressure

Services We DO NOT Offer

Our aim is to create the most positive long-term outcome for each client according to their individual goals.

We do this using modalities supported by the best evidence available.

While the empirical evidence backing every modality has much room for growth, we do not currently offer these services:

  • Reflexology
    • Alternative: Talk to your therapist about the history of your pain.
  • Shiatsu
    • Alternative: Sustained compression
  • Reiki, Acupressure, Acupuncture, Applied Kinesiology, Polarity therapy, Shiatsu, Homeopathy, anything involving energy, qi, or toxins
    • Alternative: Education. It will only cost you 15 minutes, and $0
  • Cupping
    • Alternative: Swedish or sustained compression
  • Craniosacral therapy
    • Alternative: Swedish massage
  • Specific Diagnoses
    • Alternative – Educate our clients that symptoms that surely feel like “sciatica” or “piriformis syndrome” could be many other things, and that ailments can also present without common symptoms
    • Instead of offering a certain explanation, we believe in two-way communication during treatment to monitor the effectiveness of our therapy

How to find a good massage therapist

It is difficult. Price is not a good indicator of quality. I believe credentials are also not a strong indicator.
